Aside from a piece of butter there is also some coconut oil or MCT Oil (made from coconut oil) in the so-called bulletproof coffee. Many are convinced that this recipe is the perfect foundation to start the day with high energy.
Actually, the idea to stir fat in one’s hot drink is not from the US, but from the Tibetan high mountains. There, butter is served in tea. The American Dave Asprey has adopted this idea for coffee. On his website (designed specifically for nutrition tips) he recommends not only butter, but also some coconut oil in his coffee. Alternatively you can use liquid MCT oil made from coconut oil.
Asprey promotes coffee with oil because it is supposed to give more energy than ordinary coffee with milk or sugar and is also saturating. Representatives of Paleo diet, based on edibles which were already present in the Stone Age, swear by oily buttercakes. The fats contained in butter and coconut oil are rapidly converted into energy by the body, and provides a long-lasting power-source.
That means not only the caffeine of the coffee keeps you awake and fit, but the energy of the fats can additionally provide for higher and persistent concentration capacity. Many people who have tried the drink reported that after a cup of coffee with oil and butter they felt no need to have breakfast. Asprey gives the recipe as one of the tips with which he has lost several kilos.
Studies that prove that it is healthier and more effective to drink bulletproof coffee every morning do not exist. That’s why the case with bulletproof coffee is – as with many other diet tips – always to take with a pinch of salt. Everyone has to personally test whether an oily coffee is good for breakfast or not. The recipe is quick and easy to prepare. Simply add a tablespoon of meadowland butter and a tablespoon of native coconut oil, such as the KULAU Organic Coconut Oil into a cup of filter coffee and mix for 20 seconds – ready is your bulletproof coffee for breakfast! Sugar and milk are not allowed. We recommend using some coconut blossom sugar for sweetening.
Ingredients for 200 ml of coffee
- 2.5 EL ground coffee (optional from whole beans)
- 200 ml of water
- 1 tbsp KULAU Organic Coconut Oil or KULAU MCT Oil
- 1 tbsp meadowland butter
- Pinch of cinnamon or cardamom (optional)
Mix all the ingredients in a blender or with a milk frother until a uniform liquid without there being a grease layer on top has formed.
